Chapter Eleven

The trip took longer than he recalled, and the first stirrings of ill anticipation cramped his gut as he paid off the driver and made his way into the hotel. He didn’t want to do this. Confrontation with the one being who’d offered him succour and a glimpse into what his future might’ve been like was something that grated like needles to his heart. But he had to be sure. Shayne was his friend above all else, and he would do anything to keep him safe.

On the sixth floor, he rapped on the door to Marc’s room with all the confidence he could muster. Marc had company, and the hum of their voices within dimmed to disquieting murmurs. For a split second he wanted to bolt, his resolve wavering. No. This was something he had to do.

The door was opened by a tall blonde dressed in tight leathers almost obscenely moulded to her voluptuous, hourglass frame. Gianni pushed past with false bravado, slamming the door shut while keenly aware of nearly a dozen sets of eyes zeroing in on him like a blaring target. Both men and women of such physical beauty it was almost painful to look upon them, stood from seated positions, staring with an intensity that raised the fine hairs on the back of his neck.

“Gianni?”

Marc’s voice floated out from the sea of expectant faces. His handsome visage came into view as he peered around the arm of the well-built man leaning intimately over him at the table on the far end. A spark of acid burned the back of Gianni’s tongue at the sight. Mine! The unbidden thought reverberated in his mind, shaking his determination, but a sharp laugh to his left jolted him back to awareness.

“Is this your new flavour of the month, Marc?” the blonde asked in a seductive French accent. She sauntered over to Gianni with a lascivious smirk. “Too delicate for my tastes but a prize indeed.”

“What in the names of our cursed Gods is this, Marc?” A man, bronze of flesh with razors blazing from his beady eyes, spoke up from near the bed. “Have you lost your mind? Cannot your appetites wait until these proceedings are finished?”

“Hold, all of you,” Marc said on a growl as he gained his feet. His furious attention was focused solely on Gianni who braced himself against the man’s menacing glower.

Marc was angry with him for the intrusion? Righteous, smug bastard! As before, Marc’s emotions filtered into him as though they were connected by an invisible thread. Only this time, Gianni didn’t contemplate the anomaly, too furious at the unexpected animosity he could feel exuding from the sorcerer.

The man standing beside Marc sneered in condescension. “You risk a human coming here? He’s pretty enough to be a whore, and don’t get me wrong, I’ve had my fair share of them, but James is right. He has no business here.”

The leering, crude look he sent Gianni was too much to bear. Gianni forgot his countenance of diplomacy and shot back, “Good to know we haven’t all died out.
